RSI on futures: catching overheating across several timeframes

RSI (Relative Strength Index) shows how overbought or oversold a coin is: values of 70 and above point to buying overheating, 30 and below to an oversold market. In Trap Radar RSI can be set on 9 timeframes and required to be overheated on several of them at once.

Illustration: this is how a condition fires in Trap Radar for RSI. It shows the logic, not market data.

What RSI shows

RSI compares the strength of rising and falling candles over a period and maps it onto a 0–100 scale. The longer and sharper a rise without pullbacks, the closer the value gets to 100. It is not price or volume, but the speed and one-sidedness of a move: buyers pressing non-stop — high RSI, sellers — low.

How to read RSI on futures

  • 70 and above — the coin is overbought: the rise was fast and one-sided. Not a sell signal, but a warning that momentum may be fading.
  • 30 and below — the coin is oversold, selling pressure was one-sided.
  • One timeframe is noise. On the 5-minute chart overheating appears in almost every spike. When RSI is high on 5m, 15m and 1h at the same time, the overheating is systemic.
  • Overheating can last. In a strong trend RSI can stay above 70 for weeks, so it is used together with other data.

How to set RSI in Trap Radar

In the trap builder RSI is available on 9 timeframes — from 5m to 1d. Each condition is either a threshold (≥ or ≤) or a “from–to” corridor. A condition can be required (“AND”) or a confirmation (“OR”).

A typical setup for a short after a pump is a ladder of thresholds: higher on the lower timeframe, lower on the higher one. That is how the Black Swan demo radar works: RSI 5m ≥ 70, 15m ≥ 68, 1h ≥ 65 are required and RSI 4h ≥ 65 is a confirmation. In the real BTWUSDT signal of 17.10.2026 the values were 76.95, 75.54 and 75.51.

Besides a single coin's RSI there is the RSI of the whole market — the median and the share of overbought coins. That is a separate group, Market pulse.

Common mistakes

  • Shorting the first RSI above 70 on the 5-minute chart.
  • Using the same threshold on every timeframe: on higher timeframes RSI reaches extremes less often.
  • Reading RSI without open interest and CVD: overheating without signs that buying is drying up often continues.

Which radars use it

Thresholds from the Trap Radar PRO demo radars, as in the dashboard. All required rules (AND) must match; confirmations (OR) count up to the minimum.

FAQ

What RSI threshold should I use for a short?
There is no universal one. The Trap Radar demo radars use a ladder: 70 on 5m, 68 on 15m, 65 on 1h and 4h. Check the threshold with a backtest on your coins.
Does RSI work on low-liquidity altcoins?
It does, but it is noisier: on a thin coin one large trade can push RSI up. That is why it helps to require overheating on several timeframes and a volume confirmation.
Can RSI be used for a long?
Yes. The condition is set as RSI ≤ a threshold, for example for a bounce after a sell-off. LONG or SHORT direction is chosen in the trap settings.
